Melbourne High School Rowing Association
FAQ
What are the season(s) for rowing?
Rowing is a two season sport. In the Fall, we recruit new rowers and compete in 5000 - 6000 Meter 'Head Races'.
The season starts the first week of school and usually lasts till Mid December and consists of 3-5 Regattas, with one
optional Regatta out of state.
In the Spring season, we recruit additional new rowers in early January. We start with an indoor erg competition in
February, and roll right into the spring season with 5-7 sprint races that are 1500 to 2000 Meters. The season
begins in early January and ends in late April for states, or late May for Nationals.

Do I have to participate in both seasons?
We prefer that you compete in both the Fall and Spring seasons, but we know that is not always possible for those
students who compete in other sports. The most important season is the Spring, when we focus on the national
competitions. There is not much time to practice in the spring before racing starts, so it's important to stay in shape
and exercise on an erg if you are not rowing both seasons. We have had rowers successfully compete in races in
the Spring who started practicing on the rowing machines in January.

Is rowing a varsity sport?
Yes & No. Rowing at Mel-Hi is treated like a sport since we are under the same rules as all other sports and our
Coaches are hired by and report to the MHS Athletic Director. We are defined as a Club, and hence, we do not
receive any support or funding from the County or the State. We are, however, a fully sanctioned 'Club Sport'
recognized by the Brevard County School District. Our designation as a club sport allows us to compete in national
and international events. First year Rowers are called "Novice" Rowers, and Returning Rowers are referred to as
Varsity Rowers. Rowers who meet certain criteria and row both seasons are awarded varsity letters.

Where and when do you practice?
Practices are held at the FIT Anchorage. We practice Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturdays.
Afterschool practices start at 3:45 and end at 6:00 p.m. Saturday practices are from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Transportation to the Anchorage is on your own. Many Parents and rowers hook up for car pooling.

How much does it cost?
Because we are a club sport, we receive no funds from Brevard cCunty or the state. Melbourne High School Rowing
is self supporting and is a completely parent-run organization. The parents' organization sets the dues and estimates
the costs of each race. Operations are paid for by rower assessments. Large equipment purchases are paid for
through fundraising.

Through fundraising activities during the year, rowers have the opportunity to defray some, or all, of their rowing
expenses, thus making the team accessible to any student who chooses to join. The dues for the 2008-2009 school
year are $100.00 Registration and $300 per season. There are some additional costs for uniform and team trips to
out-of-town races.

What's in it for my parents?
Bulldog Rowing depends on the time and talent of our parents at every turn. From towing boat trailers, to providing
food for regattas, to managing the equipment, to organizing Pasta dinners, uniforms and travel of the team, our
parents show their support. Fortunately, the rewards are great! Through monthly parents' meetings, we keep
parents informed of what's happening in the life of the team and give them a voice in team activities. There are lots
of opportunities to volunteer and lots of cameraderie with other parents.

So, if you're looking for a team where athletes and parents can both make a difference, Mel Hi Crew is for you!
